Meet Your Bass Teacher
Hi, my name is Noel Wentworth, and I’ve been teaching guitar, bass, and ukulele for more than 25 years. I’ve also been a musician and performer for more than 40 years, with experience performing, recording, and playing with musicians in a variety of settings.
I graduated from Selkirk College’s Music Performance program and hold a Licentiate in Music Education with Distinction through RSL Awards. I’ve also completed Grade 7 Rockschool Bass, so I know the Rockschool examination system from both the student and teacher perspectives.
As the British Columbia representative for RSL Awards, I have a good understanding of the Rockschool curriculum, assessment process, and current examination requirements. I enjoy helping students prepare for exams, but I also want to make sure they’re developing practical skills they can actually use when they’re playing music outside of their lessons.
Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to teach hundreds of students, each with their own interests, learning styles, experience, and goals. Some students want to learn their favourite songs, while others want to improve their technique, prepare for an exam, play in a band, or simply become more comfortable with their instrument.
I like to keep my lessons relaxed, friendly, and encouraging while still giving students clear direction and helping them steadily build their skills. Most importantly, I want my students to enjoy playing music and feel good about their progress.
What You’ll Learn in your Bass Lessons
Whether you're picking up the bass for the first time or want to become a more confident and versatile player, lessons with Noel are designed around the music you want to play and the skills you want to develop.
Students can work on:
- Playing favourite songs and bass lines
- Rhythm, timing, groove, and coordination
- Proper bass technique and fretboard knowledge
- Bass TAB and standard music notation
- Scales, chords, and music theory
- Rock, pop, funk, and other musical styles
- Creating bass lines, fills, and basic improvisation
- Understanding the role of bass in a band
- Playing with other musicians and developing ensemble skills
- Preparing for performances and school music programs
- Rockschool/RSL Awards exam preparation
The goal is not simply to learn notes. Students develop the timing, listening, technique, and musical awareness needed to play bass confidently with other musicians.

Bass Lessons for All Ages and Skill Levels
Noel works with bass students ages 9 and up, from complete beginners to experienced players. Lessons are adapted to each student’s ability, goals, and musical interests rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach.
Beginners learn the fundamentals of bass, including proper technique, rhythm, reading, and playing their first songs.
Intermediate players can work on timing, groove, fretboard knowledge, technique, and playing confidently with other musicians.
Advanced players can develop more challenging techniques, improvisation, theory, musical interpretation, performance skills, and prepare for Rockschool exams.
Lessons are available for children, teens, and adults, including students learning bass for a school or community band, adults picking up the instrument for the first time, and experienced players looking to improve.
Whether you want to play your favourite songs, join a band, support a school music program, prepare for an exam or performance, or simply become a better bass player, lessons can be tailored to what you want to achieve.
