Hi, my name is Lora Wentworth, and I’ve been teaching music for more than 25 years. Over that time, I’ve had the opportunity to work with students of all ages and experience levels, and I really enjoy helping people discover the fun and satisfaction that comes from making music.

I hold a Diploma in Music Performance and Composition from Selkirk College, a Licentiate in Music Education through RSL Awards, and Grade 8 Royal Conservatory of Music.

My experience goes beyond teaching one-on-one lessons. I’ve performed in concert bands, directed ensembles of up to 35 musicians, and taught music theory at the college level. These experiences have given me a broad understanding of music and of the different ways students learn and develop as musicians.

When I teach saxophone, I like to build a strong foundation while keeping lessons enjoyable and encouraging. Whether you’re picking up a saxophone for the first time or you’re an experienced player looking to improve, I take the time to understand what you want to achieve and shape lessons around your interests and goals.

My goal is to help you become a confident saxophone player while making sure you’re having fun along the way. Music should be something you look forward to, and I want that to be part of every lesson.

Lessons are designed to help students become confident, well-rounded musicians while enjoying the process of making music.

Depending on the student’s age, experience, and goals, lessons may include:

• Producing a clear, consistent saxophone tone
• Developing proper breathing and embouchure
• Improving rhythm, timing, and musical expression
• Reading standard music notation
• Building sight-reading skills
• Learning scales, arpeggios, chords, and music theory
• Developing ear training and listening skills
• Learning improvisation and soloing techniques
• Preparing for performances and school band
• Developing confidence when playing with other musicians
• Exploring jazz, pop, funk, classical, and contemporary music

Students are encouraged to work on music they enjoy while developing the technical and musical skills needed to become confident players.

Saxophone lessons at Upbeat Music Academy are designed for kids, teens, and adults at all experience levels. Whether you’re picking up a saxophone for the first time, returning to music after many years, or looking to take your playing further, lessons are adapted to your age, experience, interests, and goals.

Beginners learn the fundamentals of saxophone playing, including proper technique, tone production, reading music, rhythm, and playing songs they enjoy. No previous musical experience is required.

Intermediate and advanced students can work on improving technique, tone, scales, sight reading, musical expression, improvisation, and more advanced repertoire.

Children and teens can receive additional support with school band, concert music, auditions, and developing the skills and confidence they need to play with other musicians.

Adults are welcome whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced player returning to the saxophone. Lessons can focus on learning for enjoyment, developing specific skills, playing favourite songs, or working toward more advanced musical goals.

Because lessons are private and one-on-one, students can progress at a comfortable pace without being held back or feeling pressured to keep up with a group.
