Guitar Lesson FAQs (What Parents & Students Ask Most)

Noel Wentworth charges $33/half hour private Guitar, Bass or Ukulele lesson.

9 years old is the magic age to start Guitar lessons.

Because of hand/finger size, coordination (fine motor skills), attention span, etc., unfortunately its best to wait till they are 9 years old.

The last thing we want to see, is a students love for music crushed forever because it was too hard for them.

There are some occasions when a student who is taller/ larger hand size and more mature for their age that can start at 8 years old but it rarely works out other wise.

Even though it's not what they want to learn, Ukulele is a better instrument to start with and can be learned at Age 7. All the chord shapes learning on Ukulele are directly applicable to the Guitar.

Piano lessons are also a great option if students aren't old enough to take Guitar lessons.  Piano lessons can successfully be taught from the age of 4 and in my experience, any students starting with piano and then move to guitar, excel because of the fine motor skills they have developed.

Students will need either an Acoustic or an Electric Guitar.

If they have an Electric Guitar, the student doesn't need to bring an instrument cable to their lesson. I have one at our studio.

When you sign up for lessons, you book in for a specific weekly time slot. Most commonly, September through June, as the Upbeat Music Academy follows the “school calendar”.

Lesson fees are either payable IN FULL for the entire year in advance of starting your lessons, or you have the option of choosing an averaged monthly pre-authorized payment either through your credit card, eTransfer or cash. Please note: casual cash payments are not available.

  • Method book(s), sheet music, worksheets, lesson binder/notebook for lessons and assignments
  • Even though our Guitar teacher is equipped with a Computer, if the student is wanting to learn or need help with a particular song by ear, please bring your device the song is on (Ipad, Cel Phone, Etc.).
  • If it’s your first Guitar lesson with us and you have taken lessons before, please bring any previous learning material to your lesson.

Yes! If the student is willing, twice a year we arrange a teacher supported, student showcase for our students to perform at outside our studios.

Having anxiety before a performance is completely normal but small performances like this are an important life skill to develop.

If the student understands they are supported and shown appreciation for the hard work they have put in, the more confident they will be with other areas in their lives.

Comfort with public speaking,  interacting with others and feeling safe for going outside your comfort zone all starts with goals like this.

This is highly encouraged as a life lesson.

First off, we’ll miss you!

Two lessons notice must be provided for withdrawal. Immediate withdrawal is subject to a two lesson cancellation fee. The Upbeat Music Academy reserves the right to terminate lesson contracts on unpaid accounts.

If you want to get good, you need to put in the time.

Many of us are used to instant gratification now a days. Please understand you will get out of the Guitar what you put into it time wise.  The more consistently you practice, the better you’ll get.

On average, 30 minutes of practice or more a day depending on the level the student is what is needed.

That said most younger students will need to ease into it.

With younger students, start with 15 minutes 4-5 days a week and then increase the practice time slowly till you can get to 20 or 30 minutes a day.

Set a daily time to get in the habit of practicing. For example: After dinner, as soon as you get home from school or a set time 4-4:30pm.

If you do this 5 days a week, take the weekend off.

When you book a lesson, that time is set aside just for you. Because of that, the lesson is considered used whether or not you’re able to attend.

If you need to miss a lesson, I’m happy to help when I can—but I do require advance notice. To qualify for a possible make-up lesson, please let me know by 10 AM on the day of your lesson.

If notice is given after that time, or after the lesson has already started, I’m not able to offer a make-up lesson.

I completely understand that things can come up, and I do make exceptions from time to time depending on the situation. Thanks so much for your understanding—my schedule is quite full, and advance notice helps me offer that time to another student when possible.

We do have other options like:

    • Online lesson (ZOOM)
    • Extending a lesson (schedule permitting)
    • Rescheduling the lessons for another day (schedule permitting)Keep in mind there are no paid lessons over Christmas holidays or Spring break so make-up lessons can be arranged at those times as well. See Noel’s lesson policies for more information.
